Bible Reading Plans & Devotionals

Every Christian should be reading through the entire Bible on a regular basis. Many discipline themselves to go through the Bible once a year. My brother-in-law challenged me on this years ago--he has been doing this for 27 years.

For those of us who need help, there are many great tools that will guide you through Scripture once a year. Many of them use calendar dates which I find very frustrating because once you get behind, you feel defeated and end up giving the whole thing up. Psychologically, it's tough to be reading the passages assigned for Feb 4th on May 15th. My suggestion is just to start on Jan 1, no matter what date it is, and ignore the dates right off the bat.

For the Love of God, vol. 1
by D. A. Carson

This book by Carson is one of the best devotionals I've ever been through, and that's why it's here. Carson is highly regarded for his sharp theological grasp, along with a pastoral, horse-sense.

The devotionals follow M'Cheyne's Bible reading plan that is one of the most accessible Bible reading plans. It lists 4 passages of Scripture per day: Old Testament and New Testament in the morning. Old and New in the evening.

Carson lists the passages of Scripture to be read for each day, then picks one to relfect on. Each one of his reflections is only one page long, and it provides a helpful guide through Scritpure, while enlarging your understanding of the Biblical texts, quite often shattering common misunderstandings.

For the Love of God, vol. 2
by D. A. Carson

When you finish Carson's first volume, you will want to get his second. It's just like his first volume, but this one deals with a different passage than he covered in the first.

Carson's goal with this series is to complete 4 volumes which, when assembled, will provide a reflection on every passage of Scripture laid out by M'Cheyne's Bible reading outline.
