STUDY BIBLES

A good study Bible is a valuable tool. They are very helpful when faced with simple interpretive questions, and a quick glance at the notes provided will often save you a lengthy trip to a commentary to find the answer.

Before purchasing, make sure you have the binding that you prefer.
Hardcover is durable and inexpensive.
Bonded leather usually wears out quite fast. Avoid bonded leather.
Genuine leather is pricey, but well worth the investment on a good Bible.

The MacArthur Study Bible
edited by John MacArthur

Another fabuluous study Bible with a vast amount of notes. This study Bible is the combined effort of the Master's Seminary faculty, who are well respected for their careful exegesis of the text. Available in the NKJV and NASB. Perhaps it will soon be available in the ESV.

The Literary Study Bible
edited by Leland Ryken

This is a unique Bible, though I would not necessarily call it a 'study Bible' because it has no interpretive notes like most study Bibles. But this Bible is worth consideration because it is 'readable'. The page is laid out in single column format, with paragraphs like a normal book, and is easy on the eyes.

The 'Literary Study' aspect is found in how each chapter, or scene break, is preceeded by an introductory commentary that explains what is coming in the chapter and how it fits into the larger scheme of the story and the Bible.

The Literary Study Bible is in the ESV. You can PREVIEW the Bible at the official website.

ESV Compact Tru-tone Bible
Crossway Publishers

This is not a study Bible, but it is one of the best, handy, pocket-sized Bibles you will find. I recieved one at a conference, and wasn't too excited about it until I started carrying it in my laptop bag. The layout and printed type is surprisingly easy to read.

I find myself using it everywhere. I can generally read through 4 to 5 chapters a day just on the metro or waiting at a bus stop. This is my most treasured Bible.
